In 2006, William Scott independently released his debut album Who's Afraid of William Scott?, which sparked controversy because of its daring subject matter regarding race relations, the loss of cultural history and homophobia in the African American community. The album quickly gained attention from several newspapers and magazines such as, k Times, The Michigan Chronicle, Between The Lines Newspaper, and two consecutive issues of Out Magazine.
